Doctor Strange tops US box office

Benedict Cumberbatch’s new movie Doctor Strange has topped the US box office on its opening weekend.

The superhero movie sees Benedict play neurosurgeon Steven Strange, who turns to mystic powers when his career is ended in a car accident. The movie took an imperssive $85 million (£67.9 million) in North American theatres, according to studio estimates.

The film, which opened internationally last weekend, was one of a strong batch of new movies which drew audiences to cinemas in large numbers in America this weekend, including Trolls and Mel Gibson’s WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge.

Trolls, an animated musical featuring the voices of Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, took second place with $45.6 million (£36.4 million).

Hacksaw Ridge, which is about the true story of Desmond Doss’s heroics during the battle of Okinawa, earned $14.8 million (£11.8 million).
