Stephen Fry deletes Twitter account after BAFTA's 'bag lady' joke.
Stephen Fry has deleted his Twitter account following criticism of his 'bag lady' joke at this year's BAFTA Awards.
The BAFTA host commented on Costume Designer Jenny Beavan picking up the Best Costume design gong for Mad Max: Fury Road. “Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to an awards ceremony dressed as a bag lady.”
But many Twitter users saw the joke as an insult, even though Fry and Beavan are close friends and have worked together on the movies Gosford Park & Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows.
"Will all you sanctimonious **** just **** off. Jenny Beavan is a friend and joshing is legitimate. Christ I want to leave the planet."
Meanwhile at the Awards, Leonardo DiCaprio picked up Best Actor for The Revenant and the movie also picked up the Best Film gong.
Brooklyn won Best British Film while Kate Winslett & Mark Rylance picked up the Best Supporting Actor gongs for Steve Jobs & Bridge Of Spies respectively.
The Bafta film awards drew its lowest TV audience in six years with an audience of 4.5m, down from 4.9m last year.
